VERUCCI Cigar Care & Storage

They say more than 200 hands help create a single cigar — from growing and curing the leaves to rolling each one with precision. With that much care behind every stick, storing your cigars properly at home is essential to preserving their quality.

Whether you’re just getting started or already a seasoned smoker, a humidor is a must-have. It keeps your cigars at the right humidity, protects their flavor, and makes every smoke feel just as good as the day it was crafted.

What is a Cigar Humidor?

Whether you’re a seasoned cigar lover or just getting started, the best way to store your cigars is in a humidor. A humidor is a special storage box designed to copy the warm, humid climate where cigars are made. It keeps the temperature steady and the humidity high so your cigars stay fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced.

Humidors come in many sizes — from small travel cases to full rooms — but what makes them unique is their ability to control humidity exactly, something an ordinary box or drawer can’t do.

How Does a Humidor Work?

Cigars are made from natural tobacco leaves, so they react to the air around them. A humidor creates the same warm, humid environment cigars were made in — which helps them stay fresh, flavorful, and smooth for years.

For best results, keep your humidor at about 68–70°F and 70–75% humidity. As a simple rule:

If the temperature is a little lower, the humidity can be a little higher — and if the temperature is higher, the humidity should be slightly lower.

How Do I Set Up a Cigar Humidor?

Picking a good-quality humidor is key to keeping your cigars in perfect condition. Most humidors are lined with Spanish cedar, which is great for aging and protecting premium cigars — but it needs to be seasoned before use.

To season it, lightly wipe the inside with distilled water and let it dry completely. Then, follow the manufacturer’s setup steps and keep the humidifying element filled for a few days before adding your cigars.

Always use distilled water only — this prevents mineral buildup and mold inside your humidor, helping your cigars stay fresh and flawless.

How Long Do Cigars Last in a Humidor?

When your humidor is properly maintained, cigars can stay fresh and enjoyable for years. But if they’re left out in a heated or air-conditioned room, they can dry out and be ruined in just a few hours.

To make sure your humidor is doing its job, you can use a digital hygrometer to check the humidity — or simply keep an eye on your cigars. If they feel slightly oily and supple, they’re in great shape. If they start to feel dry, it’s time to add more distilled water. If cigars become moldy from too much humidity, remove the water source, clean the humidor, and let the cigars slowly dry for a month or two before smoking them again. Keeping the balance right means every cigar ages beautifully.

How Long Do Cigars Last Without a Humidor?

If you’re traveling or have a few cigars on hand without a humidor, there are still ways to keep them fresh for a short time. A portable humidor is the best option, but tubos and cigar cases can usually protect a cigar for up to 72 hours. You can also improvise by placing the cigar in a plastic bag with a slightly damp paper towel — just make sure the towel doesn’t touch the cigar directly.

But remember, cigars don’t stay fresh for long without proper storage. If a cigar dries out, it can take months in a well-maintained humidor to bring it back — and even then, it may never fully recover its original flavor. So if your cigar is drying out, it’s better to store it properly and enjoy it later rather than rush the smoke.
